The edinburgh coffee morning quiz 2010 - its the taking part that counts

</object>

This morning was my third visit to the edinburgh coffee morning, which also happened to be the yearly quiz.
The coffee mornings are very relaxed and are a healthy reminder that you love what you do for a living. Which is a nice way to start any weekend.

While I thought I knew more than the average bear about social media and the world of digital, it turns out I need to up my game. The great Brendan Mc Neill took some excellent photos this morning which are embedded above.

Here's a sampling of the questions:
  1. What company owns flickr?
  2. What is the google protocol for RSS called?
  3. Who is the founder of wordpress?
  4. Whats Biz Stones real first name?
  5. Who wrote the book 'the long tail'
  6. What does ASCII stand for?
  7. What does JPG stand for?
If you know the answers to any of the above put them in the comments, because I sure didn't!
Also if you live in Edinburgh, are interested in social media and digital marketing in general then maybe I will see you there.

Watch the video above to get an overview, heres Mike Coulters overview:

The ECM is a weekly gathering of East Coast producers, marketeers, writers, filmmakers, geeks and the occassional PR person at Centotre, 103 George Street. Come along any Friday, 8am-9am, to see what people have been up to that week, share ideas and make new contacts.

Drinking tea in Bristol is the new drinking tea in London - Check out the Tease Made exhibition

Illustrators Peskimo and Chris Dickason have teamed up to put on a tea-time themed exhibition opening this Friday March 19 at Start - a new shop and exhibition space in the heart of Bristol...

The exhibition, entitled Tease Made, will celebrate, Peskimo tells us, "the social rituals, history, iconography and biscuit-dunking goodness of enjoying a cup of tea." There will be prints, paintings, sketches and sculptural pieces on show. Here are a few images that will be on display...

Sometimes the client is right for the idea - the story of two design students from Kingston University london

This time last year, Kingston University graduates Tom Wrigglesworth and Matt Robinson were spending a lot of time in the company of printers.

With the D&AD Student Awards deadline looming, they had hit on an idea to promote HP Workstations’ ability to bring to life ‘anything the creative mind can conceive’.

‘Our tutors always taught us to come up with a great idea, then work out the right channels to use,’ said Tom.  They made a film that turned the otherwise mundane experience of everyday printing into a brilliantly choreographed audiovisual orchestra. They spent days holed up in a studio coaxing a stack of printers to perform.

One precious drop of whisky, beautiful packaging by Donna Hainan at Navyblue

Beautiful design work by Donna Hainan at Edinburghs Navy Blue, why isnt this on lovelypackage.com

The Mortlach 70 years old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the first of these and navyblue senior designer Donna Hainan took as inspiration the idea of a single precious drop: this led to the tear-drop shape of the hand-blown crystal which is etched with deliberately contemporary typography and has no label: to allow for the full beauty of the whisky to shine through, revealing “the colour of sun-bleached polished mahogany” according to whisky writer and connoisseur, Charles MacLean.

The box design works around the idea of a frame rather than a container; echoing the minimalist style of the bottle by using hidden magnets rather than hinges and with the clean, modern logotype, chosen for the Generations brand, silver-foil stamped onto Brazilian rosewood.

navyblue Group MD Douglas Alexander said: “We were delighted to work on this historic project. Gordon & MacPhail and I go back 25 years, so the new Generations brand, created by navyblue, is particularly close to my heart.”

Saw it on the drum

New advert for match.com from London agency Mother
Its got a lovely quality to it, beautifully shot.

The campaign  is described by Katie Mackay, strategist at Mother London as ’ getting back to the heart of what the category is really all about. From the tiniest shared moment right through to the boldest, most romantic gesture, love in all its guises is something we understand, talk about and even dream about through love stories. And it’s creating these stories that get everyone at match out of bed in the morning. The new campaign centres around the very start of one of these love stories; the beautiful, almost indescribable moment when you both just know.”

Get your design into the hands of 2 Million people in the UK

How great is this idea: D&AD support the industry, Metro get some free and powerful creative and most importantly some designers who crave a bit of personal PR get exactly that. Why don't more companies do this?

Do you work in design or advertising and want evidence of your creative genius in the hands of 2 million commuters?

D&AD and Metro are taking Behind the Idea to the front page by launching a competition that challenges creatives to design a coverwrap for Metro.

We want you to create something for our readers - true urbanites, who live and work in cities across the UK. Our readers love their cities and city living.  Your challenge is to design something to inspire and motivate them on their morning commute.

If you win, your entry will be wrapped around an April issue of Metro’s London edition, and your work will be featured in an upcoming edition of Behind the Idea.

Visit www.metrowrap.co.uk for the full brief and terms and conditions.

Sparks design some beautiful album artwork for Belfast artist Dukes Special

I saw Duke Special a few times back when it seemed he was never out of the Empire Bar.

Fantastic music if you get the chance to go see him, its well worth it. Also has great taste in agencies to produce album artwork.

This lovely new box set of three album releases by the artist Duke Special has been designed Sparks, London. It coincided with his recent performance in the Brecht play Mother Courage at the National Theatre London.
