A penny for my thoughts

Drove down from Portstewart this morning to Belfast, snapped this pic
of Samson... Might be Goliath I can never tell the difference (does
one have a beard?).

Early start and back to Edinburgh, headed to the hoog at assembly
rooms on George street.

It's my birthday tomorrow, so twelve o'clock is doubly significant.
Next year is my big three O, I wonder where we will be for that?

As I waited to board the plane a well to do elderly lady picked up a
penny from the floor and handed it to me for good luck.

Now I am ready for the new year.
Hope you all have a great night and year ahead.

Napier University - meeting room of the future

Its future technology day here at Candyjar.
I cant believe this is in Edinburgh, please Napier can we come and have a look?

It has multiple touch enabled surfaces including four 42" HD dual touch screens, one 46" HD multitouch screen and a 108" multitouch table. The software is a mix of Windows 7, OS X and Linux but the table runs PyMT. The walls are digitally augmented whiteboards which capture anything written anywhere. This is a functioning meeting room as well as a research platform for novel UI and UX. The room will officially open it's door in Jan 2010.

Beautiful video on the psychology & user behavior of the digital magazine

The concept aims to capture the essence of magazine reading, which people have been enjoying for decades: an engaging and unique reading experience in which high-quality writing and stunning imagery build up immersive stories.

The concept uses the power of digital media to create a rich and meaningful experience, while maintaining the relaxed and curated features of printed magazines. It has been designed for a world in which interactivity, abundant information and unlimited options could be perceived as intrusive and overwhelming.

The purpose of publishing this concept video is first and foremost to spark a discussion around the digital reading experience in general, and digital reading platforms in particular

Giving steroids to digital Scotland

DOWNLOAD THE STRATEGY PDF

When it comes to Digital Media, Scotland has great talent and big ambitions. A group of us got together to focus on the things we can do to make a bigger impact.

We have told the Scottish government what the industry needs to happen to ensure more success we - start more companies, build bigger companies and ensure that more distribution networks are owned and based in Scotland. We also need them to raise their game, support digital media and find ways of working alone or with the UK government to provide tax benefits to Games companies in Scotland.

Highlights:

  1. Increase both the number and scale of digital media companies
  2. A national drive to increase the volume and value of innovative digital media platforms owned or managed from Scotland
  3. A greater and more profitable role for Scottish companies in the chain of distribution and interactivity
  4. A more sophisticated understanding of the value to be derived from digital media as a growing and evolving business sector
  5. A greater commitment to improving the performance of companies in the creative ‘value-chain’
  6. Much more profitable leverage of intellectual property rights
  7. Launch a pilot programme of tax and fiscal benefits to support the Dundee games sector in 2010 to increase its global competitiveness
  8. Generate greater investor awareness of digital media as a growth sector and greater investor readiness on the part of emergent companies
  9. Cultivate a more ambitious national culture of acquisition, allowing Scottish companies to buy and not always be bought.

Ending a great weekend at Belfasts Merchant hotel

Was visiting my parents in Belfast this weekend. We popped into the
Merchant bar for a cure after a walk around the city hall Christmas
Market.

I had been there before and it is as beautiful as ever. Snook into the
members bar for a look.

My mother always hung the vast amounts of cards we recieved at
Christmas on string around the house.

The merchant had the same idea only with giant oversized cards.

Well back to work tomorrow, but Christmas is just around the corner!
