Is this really great? OK it is cool... but is it really augmented reality? It seems to be an interesting way of launching content, but it does not actually augment your reality in an interesting way.

Hi Stef.
This is augmented reality, there are more adventurous types of AR, this kind uses fiduciary markers, others use GPS to provide a greater level of real world integration.

It is a burnt out trend, but this example shows it with some flourish.
Perhaps in future we will see some non marker examples, I have played with 'layar' and I wasn't impressed, GPS AR hasn't quite matured yet.

Hi Dave,

Love the blog by the way. I know what it is and how it works, I am just making the point that while it is really nice design, it does not actually augment any reality in an interesting, intuitive or beneficial way... it may as well launch a flash website. Cool, but pointless use of the technology, which is the main reason people see it as burning out.

Agreed,
In the examples shown in the above video, the movement of the marker doesn't really effect the content. Its a flash website with a twist.

Thanks for reading the blog!
Dave
