Acoustic recognition is helpful enough when it enables Gracenote to replace missing album art in iTunes, but the idea of similar technology analyzing voices in public places in order to activate video surveillance or contact the authorities is just a wee bit unsettling. That's what's happening in the Dutch town of Groningen, after the official activation of street microphones set to pick up on aggressive sounding voices helped police make three arrests in a trial run earlier in the year. According to New Scientist Tech, the secret sauce is software that detects "high frequency vowel sounds [that] span a broader frequency range." Read more on wired
